Lucky you

Overwhelmed and out of money, Minnesota shut down its appliance rebate program Tuesday morning barely 24 hours after it was launched.

Some 25,000 Minnesotans successfully nabbed a rebate certificate.
But thousands more were shut out after hours of jammed phone lines, Web site crashes and rising frustration.

The identical House and Senate bills propose the recommendations of a legislative study commission whose members agreed in November that residents should decide how their charter is changed.
The bills allow for the November 2010 election of nine district residents to a charter commission.

In the wake of Big Stone's demise, energy providers look at their options

ST. PAUL, Minn. It's been about a month since we learned the proposed Big Stone II power plant won't be built, and it's not clear what's going to replace the electricity it was supposed to generate.

In short, the options don't look good — at least not for traditional power plants — for some of the same reasons that killed Big Stone II: high construction costs, uncertainty about demand and federal greenhouse gas regulations.

In 2007, Minnesota imposed a ban on new coal-fired power plants.

Voters bring back Glahn

Bill Glahn will return to the Concord School Board for one year after defeating candidate Tom Croteau in the district's only contested race yesterday.

The two would have tied without the overwhelming support Glahn received in his home ward.

The study by the department's Office of Energy Security is meant to be a forecasting tool for policy-makers, but environmentalists who oppose building more coal power plants say the study isn't specific enough to be of much practical use.

In the race for a one-year term, former school board member Bill Glahn is pitted against newcomer Tom Croteau, vying for the seat that opened up when board Vice President Megan DeVorsey announced she will leave office early.

The additions mean four candidates are running for the three three-year spots, and two candidates are running for the one-year position to be vacated by board Vice President Megan DeVorsey.

Presenting that award at the meeting was Bill Glahn, director of the MN Dept. of Commerce's Office of Energy Security.
